Get “Yo” Sushi!

by DanicasDaily on June 20, 2011

Happy Monday all!  This morning I knew EXACTLY what I wanted when I got up.  It’s been way too long since I’ve made a Gigantic Oatmeal Protein Pancake!

Topped with 1 Tbsp Whipped Butter & 1 Tbsp Pure Maple Syrup (11 points+)

With a “side” of Coconut Coffee!

IMG_3539

I LOVE this pancake because it keeps me full for hours.  I ate lunch 5 hours later and probably could’ve gone longer.

I know I told you all that we are working on clearing out the fridge, but, I really just NEEDED to get my sushi fix.  I have listened to about 5 people talk about sushi for two weeks now and today, I get to talk about mine.

I went to Yo Sushi for the first time ~ I LOVE their Website Name ~ Get Yo Sushi!

This is a local place that is kind of a dive, but, they have amazing reviews on Yelp.

After two sips of my Miso Soup I decided today was WAY TOO hot to have soup.

IMG_3541

I got my order to go since the place was packed.  Simple, yet, delicious side salad.  I don’t know what it is, but, I just LOVE the salad dressing the Japanese restaurants use. (2 points+)

IMG_3542

I actually had a hard time deciding on which roll to get (several are fried), but, I knew exactly what I wanted when I saw they served it with fresh Jalapenos!

THE FIRE ROLL ~ Shrimp, cucumber topped with Tai, Spicy Tuna, AVOCADO, Jalapeno & Spicy Unagi Sauce

IMG_3545

It was totally HOT and made my lips hot too, but, completely delicious!  Next time I think I’ll see if they can do spicy tuna in the middle instead of the shrimp.  (13 points+ for 8 pcs)

IMG_3546

Sometimes I think when you have really delicious food, you are just not as hungry all day ~ it’s like your pallet is satisfied and convinces your stomach it needs nothing else.

I didn’t get hungry again until I started making up dinner!  I put a HEALTHY SPIN on The Tasty Kitchen’s MM Sandwiches Adorned.

IMG_3557

I honestly could not convince myself to make a recipe with 1 1/4 cups butter as delicious as it sounded.

Instead I rubbed a tri tip with Emeril’s Original Essence and grilled it for 35 minutes.  While the tri tip cooked, I caramelized onions and mushrooms in 2 Tbsp Butter until they were nice and golden.

After letting the steak rest, I sliced it and tossed it with all the juices with the onions/mushrooms and a little Worcestershire sauce.

IMG_3558

The BIG SANDWICH above includes:

* 1 Large Dutch Crusty Roll toasted on the grill (no butter)

* A layer of organic mixed greens

* 4 ounces of steak with 1/4 cup mushrooms/onions

* 2 thick slices fresh mozzarella

* Organic Basil (from our garden!)

* Organic Tomato Slices

Cut in half and shared with The Husband.  Ok ~ he had 1 1/2 sandwiches, but, I had half for 6 points+.

It really IS as delicious as it sounds and looks.  The bread is super crusty, yet, doughy.  The steak is seasoned throughout and the caramelized onions add a sweetness that goes well with the creamy cheese, basil, greens and tomatoes.

IMG_3569

I rounded out my meal with a big salad topped with 1 Tbsp Cracked Pepper Almond Slices and 1 Tbsp Bolthouse Ranch (2 points+)

IMG_3568

Plus some homemade Pickled Veggies!  I have to tell you all we shared these veggies with our nephews this weekend and they were so adorable….

“it tastes just like a pickle, but, it’s not a pickle” Open-mouthed smile

Q’s

Are you a sushi fan?  If so, do you eat it raw or cooked? What’s your FAVORITE roll?

I used to NEVER like sushi at all until my mid-20’s and one of my friends convinced me to try a teriyaki chicken roll.  Who knew I’d fall in love with it and venture our into the REAL DEAL.  I LOVE RAW fish, but, it has to be spicy, in a roll with avocado and anything else is just an added bonus!

Night all!

So how do you make this oatmeal protein pancake of yours?

I love sushi but it can’t have any raw fish in it! Really the only seafood I eat is the fake crab in California Rolls. =P My grandpa would be ashamed of me. He owned and lived in a fish market! Any veggie rolls for me! Tamago ( sweet egg omlette) and Inari (fried tofu pockets) are definitely my favorite though. ~.^

Have you ever done a sushi tutorial? I, for one, would really appreciate someone introducing me to the basics of sushi. I go to a restaurant that is known for it (I get the korean food instead) but would like to start exploring.

I’m definitely not a sushi fan! I love the protein pancakes though. I make a big batch on Sunday and eat throughout the week.

HI Robyn and Beth,

Here is a link to my protein pancake. You could make 2 servings out of it or make 1 big serving like I do :) It’s totally worth it to me to have one big pancake.

I didn’t like sushi as a teenage once I had a bad batch of it. It took me until about 4 years ago to try it again and I love it and crave it all the time.

There is a place here called Kabuki and they have a lotus on fire roll. It has spicy tuna, lotus root, and jalapeno on top of a california roll. So yummy!!! I’m going there for my birthday in 2 months and cannot wait. I need to come have lunch with you!!

I am a huge sushi fan ! So wish I could meet you for lunch some time ;) I think I shared with you that I had thought I didn’t like sushi or raw fish until B took me to lunch and insisted I try some ahi tuna and I fell in love. My favorite rolls are cucumber special (ahi tuna, roe, avacado all wrapped in cucumber) & salmon special (same kind of thing but with salmon inside and on top like a rainbow roll).

I have never tried Sushi, but am willing, just need an idea, of where to start and I don’t do real spicy, someone said california roll and I just don’t want to get something that will turn me off, and want to give it a fair shake. Any idea’s?

I love sushi. One of my favorite rolls is Philadelphia (smolked salmon, cream cheese and avocado). I love it because I LOVE lox but this lets me indulge without a huge amount of points that lox would be. I also love avacado and cucumber rolls, Boston rolls (cooked shrimp) and mixed vegetable rolls.

I am a HUGE sushi fan. I probably have it at least once a week. My favorite roll is a “healthy veggie and mango” roll that a local restaurant here makes. It is made with brown rice, and is delicious. Gee, all this sushi talk is making me hungry! Have a good day!!!

Love sushi, I like avocado rolls, california rolls, philadelphia rolls ans spicy tuna rolls. Dragon roll is excellent as well. As far as sashimi I love the white tuna and the smoked eel.

You are right, miso is great, but not on a really hot day, and yes the dressing on those side salads are delish.

Question for Danica-How do you use your points that you earn as exercise. If one does strength training how many points do you calculate?

I love sushi! However, I’ve never actually had any with raw fish in it–I always get vegetable rolls. I love anything with avocado!

Next time you go to YO Sushi… GET the Hamachi Kama! Seriously. It may look really weird when you get it, but the meat is AMAZING!

Hi Lucia,

I calculate my activity points by using the Weight Watchers online activity points calculator. For strength training, it depends on what I am doing. If I am doing more of a circuit, I will look up circuit training. If I am doing just strength training, I will look up weights and pick one depending on my level of exertion. Another option you can use is the activity points slider in the week you received in book 1.

Thanks,

Danica

HI Colleen,

I am so sorry it took me for forever to get back to your question. I know that several people start with a California Roll or a roll involving the tempura fried shrimp, chicken or the veggie rolls that include avocado. I am a big fan of having veggies for crunch and avocado in any roll I have and you do not have to get the spicy rolls at all. If you think you wouldn’t like the seaweed, you can always ask them to use the rice paper instead.

Good luck and I can’t wait to hear what you try first!
